Kampala Bypass Uganda
Constructed in 2003
The Kampala Bypass contract, constructed in 2003 included 14 Reinforced Earth abutments (7 bridges) supporting simply supported single span decks. The client was UNRA, Consulting Engineer BCEOM/Egis, and the contractor Salini/Spencon.
Advantages of a Reinforced Earth Interchange:
- Earthworks only except for distribution and deck beams
- Rapid construction since approach ramps constructed together with the abutments
- Eliminates necessity for piles on poor foundations
- Gradual pre-loading of foundation as the construction progresses
- Settlements during and post construction measured on Reinforced Earth facing elements
- Eliminates long term bump at the bridge
- The success of this project led to the Kampala Northern Bypass Extension with a further five similar bridges. The interchanges have a further advantage of the free flow of traffic without traffic lights.
